With 20 schools across the U.S., we ask whether learning opportunities for exploratory, imaginative thinking can be provided without cost to evidence-based, argumentative learning.. Teachers’ exploratory, imaginative prompts significantly predict respective learners’ evidence-based, argumentative writing— in addition to learners’ exploratory, imaginative writing. The reverse, however, was not true: Teachers’ evidence-based, argumentative prompts did not show a significant association to learners’ exploratory, imaginative writing (instead, it only linked to students’ evidence-based, argumentative writing). Learners show stronger evidence-based, argumentative writing simultaneously with exploratory, imaginative writing, when both stem from the latter: explorative and imaginative learning opportunities.
