We ask whether quality and frequency of student explanations predict later state standardized test performance with math and English. Across two studies, findings are striking, given sparsity of assessments, that we find sizable and consistent relationships. Benefits of explaining may result in part from development of a metacognitive explanatory skill that transfers across domains and over time.
